These methods can be expensive to develop, maintain, and troubleshoot, and are often complex for non-Kubernetes users. This is a widespread issue in the Kubernetes community. Instead of creating proprietary solutions, we have collaborated with Amazon and Microsoft to simplify Kubernetes APIs for all users.

What is KRO?

KRO (Kubernetes Run Operations) is a tool that focuses on simplifying the developer's workflow with Kubernetes. It abstracts away the complexities of Kubernetes’ configurations, allowing developers to focus on building and deploying applications, rather than getting bogged down in managing Kubernetes resources manually.


KRO integrates with your existing Kubernetes setup, whether on a local machine or in the cloud. Its primary objective is to automate and simplify tasks such as resource management, environment setup, and troubleshooting. It provides a set of commands that significantly reduce the friction associated with Kubernetes development, allowing you to quickly deploy, monitor, and manage your applications.

How KRO Enhances the Developer Experience?

KRO is a Kubernetes-native framework that enables the creation of reusable APIs to deploy multiple resources as a unified entity. It allows you to package a Kubernetes deployment along with its dependencies into a single API, which can be easily used by application teams, even without Kubernetes expertise. KRO enables the creation of custom user interfaces that only display relevant parameters for end users, effectively hiding the underlying complexity of Kubernetes and cloud provider APIs.


KRO achieves this through the concept of a ResourceGraphDefinition, which outlines how a standard Kubernetes Custom Resource Definition (CRD) should be translated into a set of Kubernetes resources. End users interact with a single resource, and KRO automatically expands it into the custom resources defined within the CRD.


KRO can be used to organize and manage any Kubernetes resources. Tools such as ACK, KCC, or ASO define CRDs to manage cloud provider resources from within Kubernetes (these tools enable the creation and management of cloud resources, like storage buckets, as Kubernetes objects). KRO can also aggregate resources from these tools, along with other Kubernetes resources, to define a complete application deployment along with the necessary cloud provider resources.

Use Cases

Consider a scenario where a platform administrator wishes to provide end users with the ability to create GKE clusters through a self-service model. To do this, the administrator creates a KRO ResourceGraphDefinition, named GKEclusterRGD, that specifies the necessary Kubernetes resources. They also define a CRD called GKEcluster, which presents only the configurable options they want the end users to have access to. In addition to cluster creation, the platform team also requires that administrative workloads like policies, agents, and other resources be deployed alongside the clusters. The ResourceGraphDefinition outlines the following resources, utilizing KCC to map Kubernetes CRDs to Google Cloud APIs:

  • GKE Cluster

  • Container Node Pools

  • IAM ServiceAccount

  • IAM PolicyMember

  • Services

  • Policies


The platform administrator then configures the user interface so that end users can create new clusters by defining parameters such as:

  • Cluster Name

  • Nodepool Name

  • Maximum Nodes

  • Location (e.g., us-east1)

  • Networks (optional)


All aspects related to policies, service accounts, and service activations (as well as the relationships between these resources) are abstracted from the end user, providing a simplified experience for them.
